Zagora, located in the Draa River valley in the Drâa-Tafilalet region of Morocco, is not only known for its picturesque landscapes but also for its rich historical heritage. Nestled at the foot of Mount Zagora, the town boasts the remains of an Almoravid fortress, which serves as a testament to its ancient past. Visitors can explore the fortress and marvel at its architectural marvels, gaining insights into the region's history. While the Almoravid fortress is a prominent attraction, the exact location of the former Almoravid mosque remains a topic of debate among historians and archaeologists. Zagora is also renowned for its vibrant cultural celebrations. One such event is the annual moussem of the Sufi saint Moulay Abdelkader Jilali. This religious festival brings together locals and visitors alike, who gather to pay homage to the revered saint through music, dance, and spiritual rituals. The moussem is a captivating experience that offers a glimpse into the spiritual traditions of the region. In terms of language, Zagora is a melting pot of linguistic diversity. The primary language spoken in the city is Moroccan Arabic, but you will also hear Tachelhit and Tamazight, reflecting the cultural mosaic of the area. As you enter Zagora, you will notice a sign at the city's border that reads "Tombouctou 52 days." This sign serves as a historical reference to the time it supposedly took to travel on foot or by camel from Zagora to Timbuktu, Mali. Although the original sign has been replaced by a mural, it still serves as a reminder of the ancient trade routes that once connected these two distant destinations.
