Ouarzazate, known as the "Gate of the Desert," is not only a city but also the capital of the province of Ouarzazate in the Drâa-Tafilalet region of south-central Morocco. This vibrant city attracts a significant number of tourists during the holidays, thanks to its strategic location as a starting point for excursions into the Draa valley and the desert. One of the highlights of Ouarzazate is the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Aït Benhaddou, located just west of the city. This fortified village is a remarkable example of traditional Moroccan architecture and offers visitors a glimpse into the country's rich history. In addition to its cultural significance, Ouarzazate has gained international recognition as a prominent film location. The city is home to Morocco's largest studios, which have attracted numerous international film companies over the years. Some notable films shot in Ouarzazate include Lawrence of Arabia (1962), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), The Mummy (1999), Gladiator (2000), and Kingdom of Heaven (2005). Originally built in the 19th century, this kasbah was later expanded by the influential Glaoui family. Constructed primarily using rammed earth, the Taourirt kasbah is a remarkable example of the architectural style prevalent in the Berber-inhabited mountain and oasis regions of Morocco.
