The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, owned and operated by the Sabah Wildlife Department, is not only a sanctuary for orangutans but also an important conservation and research facility. Situated within the vast Sepilok-Kabili Forest Reserve, spanning an impressive 43 square kilometers, the center offers a range of facilities to support the well-being and rehabilitation of these incredible primates. In addition to the clinic, treatment ward, and nursery, the center also boasts a dedicated team of veterinarians, biologists, and caretakers who work tirelessly to ensure the orangutans receive the best care possible. The staff closely monitor the health and behavior of the orangutans, providing medical treatment when necessary and offering specialized diets to meet their nutritional needs. Currently, the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center is home to approximately 60 to 80 orangutans that have successfully reintegrated into the rainforest reserve. These orangutans have regained their independence and are free to explore the lush habitat as they please. To support the orangutans' transition back into the wild, the center provides supplemental food on a daily basis. However, this food is intentionally kept monotonous to inspire the orangutans to forage and search for their own sustenance. This practice helps them develop essential survival skills and ensures their long-term success in the wild. The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center not only serves as a sanctuary for these endangered primates but also plays a crucial role in raising awareness about the importance of orangutan conservation.
