Unlike other cities in the area, Page was founded in 1957 to house workers and their families during the construction of the neighboring Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River. The city sits atop Manson Mesa, 1,300 meters above sea level and 180 meters above Lake Powell. Page is renowned for being an excellent base for exploring nearby outdoor sights, among them Lake Powell and the nearby Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument and Monument Valley. The 9.8-mile Page Rimview Trail circles the city and offers hikers and mountain bikers excellent views of the city, the lake and distant mountain peaks. Landmarks along the trail include Horseshoe Bend, a lookout 1,000 feet above the deep, teal-blue waters of the Colorado River, where the river winds around a narrow bend in a mountain peak carved from sandstone. Horseshoe Bend is situated 8 km downstream from Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, approximately 6 km southwest of Page. The Antelope Canyon near Page on Navajo land was opened to tourism in 1997. This beautiful natural slot canyon, created by erosion, has steadily increased Page's tourism due to its reputation for beauty. Today, several Navajo owned tour companies offer guided trips to Antelope Canyon. Antelope Canyon includes six distinct, scenic sections of slot canyon on the Navajo Reservation, known as Upper Antelope Canyon, Rattle Snake Canyon, Owl Canyon, Mountain Sheep Canyon, X Canyon and Lower Antelope Canyon.
