Altamira de Cáceres

Located in the Andes mountains between Barinas and Merida, 20 minutes from Barinitas and 50 minutes from Santo Domingo, is the small town of Altamira de Cáceres. The city boasts beautiful architecture and a beautiful square, surrounded by some natural attractions. Most interestingly, it has kept its traditional town features and has not been affected by excessive tourism. Altamira de Caceres is the primordial state of Barinas, the first town founded there, by Spanish Captain Juan Andrés Varela on 30 June 1577. The town boasts a small, simple but beautiful church. It also has an interesting museum, the "Don Jose Angel Angarita", where antiquities are kept. Here you will find the office of "Grados", a center of Adventure, where you can go hiking, bird watching, rafting, canoeing, kayaking and other extreme sports. The town is surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery and there is a river with a waterfall about 30 meters high on the way down from the village, with a crystal-clear pool that is a little cold but ideal for swimming after a day's hiking in the mountains. The route is of medium difficulty, but interesting geological formations can be seen along the way.
