Lake Kyaninga

Lake Kyaninga is one of the treasures Uganda has to offer on the outskirts of Fort Portal town. The area is one of the best places for hiking, as the Crater Lake offers a magnificent view of Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the Mountains of the Moon. The stunning lake is located near Kibale National Park. This is where you will find Kyaninga Lodge, the spectacular result of one man's vision. It has required six years of unwavering dedication, and over a thousand hand-carved logs to bring you an African experience unlike anywhere else. The edge of a spectacular crater lake is the perfect starting point for exploring the beautiful countryside. Guided walks around the beautiful Kyaninga crater lake and forest start from here. The trail around the top of the crater offers spectacular views of the lake, the Ruwenzori Mountains and the beautiful hills of Fort Portal. The trail inside the crater is teeming with wildlife and exotic plant species. Here you'll see bat caves, groups of Black and White Colobus Monkeys, Red Tailed Monkeys, vervets and a whole range of bird species. The lake itself, the cleanest of Western Uganda's many crater lakes, measures two hundred and twenty meters deep. The lake water has a very high mineral content, which keeps out almost all plant life and prevents algae growth. The lake is free of bilharzia, making it one of the few lakes in Uganda that is safe to swim in.
