Moutoullas

Moutoullas is a beautiful little mountain village in the Nicosia District of Cyprus, 800 m above sea level in the Marathasa Valley. The village's old small stone church, the 13th-century Panayia tou Moutoulla Chapel, is among the earliest examples of the steeply pitched wooden-roofed type with frescoes. The church was built circa 1280 and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, together with nine other painted churches in the region of Troodos, for its unique wall paintings and architecture. But the main church in the village is in fact dedicated to Agia Paraskeui, and was constructed on top of an existing church. There are also 3 more churches in the village, the church of Prophet Elias, the church of the Metamorphosis Sotiros and the church of Agios Mamas. The church of Prophet Elias offers a wonderful panoramic view of the village. The village of Kalopanagiotis is located north of Moutoullas and the village of Pedoulas to the south. To the east is the Troodos Forest and to the west is Mylikouri. Moutoullas itself was constructed in the shape of an Amphitheatre. The village is also famous for its mineral water, because the crystal-clear water is very similar to the Evian water in Europe. The springs in the village became very famous when an Egyptian chemist who drank the water was cured of his medical problems with his kidneys and stomach. There is also a wonderful Nature Trail in the village called " The Baths of Rigena and Chlio". This is a magnificent and spectacular nature trail with stunning views, incredible natural wildlife, and cliffs overhanging a dirt road. Golden oaks line the road and there is a stunning waterfall on the route.
