Franz Joseph Fjord

The Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Fjord in Northeast Greenland National Park in East Greenland is a large fjord system. It is one of Greenland's largest fjords, 100 km long, running almost straight east-west, and a further 92 km long with several deep inland tributaries. Kaiser Franz Joseph Fjord empties into Foster Bay in the Greenland Sea, which is located between Cape Mackenzie at the eastern end of Geographical Society Island and Cape Franklin at the southern end of the mainland Gauss Peninsula. The fjord was first charted and partially explored by the Second German Arctic Expedition of 1869-70, which was named Kaiser Franz Joseph Fjord after Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria-Hungary, who provided substantial funding for the expedition.
