Flying over sea ice at Erik Henius Land in Greenland (2007)

Erik Henius Land

Erik Henius was a Danish trader at the beginning of the 20th century. He was known for his active role in the United Steamship Company, which was establishing new shipping routes between Denmark and Russia. He donated a reasonable amount of money and made his office available to a 1906-1908 Danish Polar Expedition, which named a peninsula in the far northeastern Greenlandic coastline after him. This peninsula is now the home of Station Nord, the second northernmost permanent settlement on Earth. It later also turned out to be the easternmost point of Greenland.
