Norwegian Bay

The Norwegian Bay is a waterway of the Arctic Ocean in the Qikiqtaaluk region of Nunavut, in Canada. To the northwest is Amund Ringnes Island and to the north is Axel Heiberg Island. To the east is Ellesmere Island and to the south is Devon Island. There are six islands in the Norwegian Bay, ranging from the largest to the smallest: Cornwall Island, Graham Island, Buckingham Island, Table Island, Exmouth Island and Ekins Island. All these islands are uninhabited. In 1852-1854, Captain Edward Belcher, who was looking for John Franklin, visited Buckingham Island. The highest peak on the island is called Mount Windsor. The peak and the island are named after royal palaces. In the Norwegian Bay, 72 marine mammals can be observed, including Polar Bears, Ringed Seals, Narwhals, Walruses, Belugas and Bearded Seals. This area is concentrated in sea ice, highlighting the importance of summer sea ice for marine mammals.
