Johansen Bay

The Johansen Bay is located on the south coast of Victoria Island, to the west of the main town of Cambridge Bay. The Nakyoktok River waterway is vital both for wildlife and for the Kitlinermiut people, who have inhabited the region for centuries and use the copper collected from the Coppermine River and Coronation Gulf. Although Johansen Bay is now uninhabited, there are old hunting lodges and the remains of a former farm along the Nakyoktok River. On the nearby hills you can see Arctic Foxes and many birds. The area is an excellent habitat for loons, Willow Grouse and other birds of the high Arctic, and there are also Musk Oxen in the area.
