Monte

Monte is a civil parish and a suburb of Funchal in the archipelago of Madeira, situated east of Funchal. The parish covers an area of approximately 18.65 square kilometers. It is known for its stunning natural beauty, with lush green forests, picturesque valleys, and towering mountains that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. From an historical perspective, Monte has played a significant role in the development of Funchal and the island of Madeira as a whole. The parish of Nossa Senhora do Monte was founded in 1565 and became a summer retreat for many of Funchal's wealthy families. Seeking a mild climate in the summer, these nouveaux riches-built summer cottages along the hills of the parish. The earliest religious building, Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte, was built in 1741 and has an impressive Baroque façade and stunning interior decorations. The historic town center of Monte is characterized by its well-preserved architecture, featuring beautiful examples of Baroque and Rococo styles, as well as charming cobblestone streets and picturesque squares. One of the main attractions in Monte is the iconic Monte Palace Tropical Garden, a stunning botanical garden that showcases an impressive collection of exotic plants and flowers from around the world. The garden was created in the 18th century and features several ponds, fountains, and walking trails that offer visitors a tranquil and serene atmosphere. Monte is also an important cultural center, with a rich tradition of folk music, dance, and crafts.
