Caldeira Velha

The hot springs of Caldeira Velha are one of the best pools of thermal water in São Miguel, an island renowned for its lush green landscapes, exotic flora, and rich geological heritage. The coolest pool, ranging from 24C to 28C, is the one farthest from the entrance. The waterfall of Caldeira Velha cascades into this upper pool, feeding warmed water from the sides of the valley. Like an endless pool, the water pours into a stream below. This stream then feeds the middle pool. Pool temperatures rise from the upper to the middle to the lower pool. The temperature of the lower pool is between 35C and 38C degrees. Located in the heart of the Azores, this natural wonder is a testament to the region's volcanic origins, where the Earth's internal forces have sculpted a breathtaking landscape of rugged coastlines, crater lakes, and steaming hot springs. The Caldeira Velha hot springs, in particular, are a marvel of geological and biological significance. The warm, iron-rich waters, infused with minerals and microelements, are said to possess therapeutic properties, attracting visitors from around the world seeking relaxation, rejuvenation, and relief from various health conditions. The springs' unique chemistry, characterized by high levels of sulfur, calcium, and magnesium, is believed to have a beneficial impact on the skin, muscles, and joints, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a holistic wellness experience. Beyond its therapeutic benefits, the Caldeira Velha hot springs also offer an immersive experience into the region's rich cultural heritage.
