Furnas

Furnas is a civil parish, one of the largest on the island and in the Azores, located in the municipality of Povoação. With an area of approximately 35 square kilometers, it is a significant hub for tourism, commerce, and agriculture, boasting a rich cultural heritage and breathtaking natural beauty. Geographically, Furnas is situated on the southeastern part of São Miguel. The parish's diverse landscape is characterized by lush green forests and rolling hills, making it an attractive destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Furnas is perhaps most famous for its hot springs, which are believed to possess therapeutic properties. In the center of the village there are many geysers, hot springs and fumaroles. The parish is home to numerous thermal pools, including the renowned Terra Nostra Park, which features a large thermal pool surrounded by lush vegetation and walking trails. Visitors can relax and rejuvenate in the warm waters, surrounded by the tranquil atmosphere of the park. The pool has a temperature of about 37°C and is filled with natural brown, iron-rich thermal water. In addition to its natural attractions, Furnas is also steeped in history and culture. The parish is home to several historical landmarks, such as the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias, which is located on a gentle rise of the embankment that runs along the length of Lake Furnas, between the lake's waters and the thick forest of the neighboring land. It was built in the neo-gothic style.
