Ukraine is an Eastern European country. The wildlife of Ukraine is incredibly diverse and rich, thanks to the country's unique geographical location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. Ukraine's varied landscape, which includes forests, steppes, mountains, and wetlands, provides a habitat for a wide range of species. The country includes six terrestrial ecoregions: Central European mixed forests, Crimean sub-Mediterranean forest complex, Eastern European Forest steppe, Pannonian mixed forests, Carpathian montane coniferous forests, and Pontic steppe.Ukraine is home to many large mammals, such as the European Bison, Brown Bear, and lynx. The country's forests are inhabited by wolves, Wild Boars, and Red Deer. In Ukraine, including the areas of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, the recorded fauna consists of 45,000 species. There are 108 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, 21 species of reptiles, 170 species of fish and 17 species of amphibians. There are about 35,000 species of invertebrates, including insects. The dominant habitats of endemic species are the Carpathian and Crimean regions. The country is also home to the European Ground Squirrel, the European Shag, the Steppe Polecat and the Eurasian Elk. A great variety of birds are found in Ukraine, those reported include game birds, night hawks, birds of prey, songbirds, swifts, waders and waterfowl. The Black Grouse, the Hazel Grouse, the gull, the owl and the partridge are some of the noted bird species. Ukraine is also an important stopover for migratory birds, with over 400 species recorded in the country. There are migratory ducks, storks, and wild geese.
