Southern Coastline

On the southern coast of East Timor are the municipalities of Covalima, Ainaro, Manufahi, Manatuto, Viqueque and Lautém. Lautém has beautiful sandy beaches and a wild, mountainous and rugged, unspoiled landscape. Many endemic birds of East Timor live here. Cave paintings can be found near the town of Lautém. There are many stone sarcophagi and animist shrines throughout the district. Lautém is also known for its bird life. The municipal flag depicts the head of a Yellow-Crested Cockatoo. The municipality of Cova Lima has mountainous areas in the south-west of the country and large areas of the Timor Sea coast, as does the Municipality of Manufahi. The area is home to the Betano Power Station in Betano suco, the largest power plant in East Timor. It supplies electricity to the southern coast of the country. The municipality of Viqueque lies on the south coast of the Timor Sea. Interestingly, there are reports and myths of crocodiles being found along the coast. The area has an extensive coastline and sandy beaches that are perfect for swimming and water sports.
