Sauraha

Sauraha is a village in the Chitwan district of Nepal, near the Rapti River and Chitwan National Park. The village is the eastern gateway to Chitwan National Park and the jungle safaris. It started out as a small and very quaint Tharu village of mud and daub huts and houses, but has now grown into a quiet little town. Jungle and wildlife safaris depart from the village on foot, jeep and elephant. In the area you can see rhinos, many kinds of deer, monkeys and Bengal Tigers. Birdwatching is also possible in and around the jungle, especially in the Bish Hajar Taal wetlands, about 10 km northwest of Sauraha, where you can see many species of birds. Sauraha village is separated from Chitwan National Park by the Rapti River, which is safe to swim in. In the dry season, you can also wander the sand dunes of the shrunken river. Since it lies on the banks of the Rapti River, the soil is fertile and humus rich. The irrigation infrastructure is also good in this region. Thus, most people are engaged in agriculture growing rice, maize and mustard, while some are engaged in small-scale manufacturing, poultry, honey and flower cultivation and tourism, which is also growing rapidly in the last decade in this region.
