Further back from the shores of Lake Malawi, the town of Salima in central Malawi is an important service and commercial center, and it is the capital of the Salima District. The taxi-bicycle is the most widely used means of transport in the district, known locally as "Dampa/kabaza". The town is located near the junction of the M14 road to Lilongwe and the lakeshore highway, 16 km inland from Senga Bay. It is a very busy small town with an intriguing market and all the usual services. The town has a variety of attractions and activities, including a Crocodile Farm, the Kuti Community Wildlife Reserve and the Thuma Forest Reserve. But there are also village tours and bird watching. Senga Bay is located east of Salima town in the Salima District. This gorgeous bay is the nearest point on Lake Malawi to the country's capital, only an hour and a half's drive east of Lilongwe. The wide stretch of sandy beach is home to a variety of hotels, from luxury hotels to small lodges and campsites. The town has a variety of attractions and activities, including a Crocodile Farm, the Kuti Community Wildlife Reserve and the Thuma Forest Reserve.
