Butha Buthe

Butha Buthe is the capital of the Butha Buthe district in Lesotho. It takes its name from Butha-Buthe Mountain, which is located to the north of the town and means "place of deposits". The settlement was established in 1884 to offer the local ruler a place to pay his taxes, instead of being forced to go to the distant town of Hlotse. The northern 'city' of Butha-Buthe, the gateway to the Northern Passes, offers easy access to the prehistoric wonders of the Moteng Valley, some of the country's most spectacular mountain routes and the Afriski ski resort. But the town itself is also worth a visit, especially for the natural rock formations on its edges. Liphofung Historical Site is situated in a tributary valley of the Hololo River, next to the main road between Butha-Buthe and Oxbow and Mokhotlong. The visitor center features an exhibition on Basotho culture and San rock art. In addition to the cultural and historical interest of the site, you can also visit various geological landmarks on the site and in the surrounding areas. As the Moteng Valley is highly populated, it provides a good chance to see the traditional Basotho way of life.
