Subiya Motorway

The Subiya Motorway is located in the Subiya region in the north of Kuwait, on the northern coast of the Gulf of Kuwait. Subiya was the cultural borderland between Mesopotamia and Neolithic Arabia. The area includes archaeological sites with Tumuli graves, settlements, campsites, wells and shell middens. The majority of tumuli date from the Early and Middle Bronze Age, from the 3rd to 2nd millennia BC. Particularly impressive are the tumuli with the so-called outer ring wall and the elongated stone platforms, probably with a ritual or symbolic function. Of the small objects, the ornaments, which are perforated pearls and beads made of semi-precious stones, deserve special attention. Several shell ornaments are also found, among them a circular plaque with geometric decoration and a 'dot in the circle' design from the Umm an-Nar and Dilmun cultures of the Persian Gulf. Nowadays, Subiya is the site of the Silk City project, the first phase of which started in May 2019.
