Sant'Agata Feltria

Sant'Agata Feltria is a comune in the Italian region Emilia-Romagna, in the province of Rimini. Here is a large fortress designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, among others. The Rocca Fregoso fortress is the symbol of the city. The first core dates back to the 12th century and consists of the polygonal tower "di Simonetto Fregoso". Later additions in the 15th century were commissioned by Federico da Montefeltro, probably with the architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini. The fortress was later converted into the residence of the Fregoso family and decorated with frescoes and ornaments, such as the 16th century frescoes in the hexagonal chapel. It was the home of Franciscan monks from 1781 to 1820, when it was completely abandoned. In 1835 the castle collapsed and in 1877 urgent works were carried out to reinforce the sandstone on which the foundations rested. In 1961, a sandstone cliff broke away and the northern corner of the building collapsed into the ravine. Since 1974, the castle has been a permanent museum. The historic city center is home to the 'Fountain Trail', which takes you through the streets of the city to visit three fountains by Ravenna mosaic artist Marco Bravura. The Snail Fountain, the idea of poet Tonino Guerra, is located in Piazzale Martiri d'Ungheria. The Moon in the Fountain is located in Piazza Fabbri, and the Impronte della Memoria is located on the site of the old horse stable at the entrance to the city, in Piazza Padre Agostino da Montefeltro.
