Mount Bromo

Situated about a 4-hour drive from Surabaya, the capital of East Java, Mount Bromo is part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, which covers an area of 800 square kilometers. With an altitude of 2,392 meters, Bromo is not one of the highest mountains in Indonesia, but its stunning beauty comes from its incredible scenery. Mount Bromo is an active volcano, with a history of frequent eruptions. The formation is linked to the subduction of the Indo-Australian tectonic plate under the Eurasian plate, which led to the formation of a chain of volcanoes in the area known as the "Ring of Fire". The volcano is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the area. Bromo is derived from the Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. An idol of Ganesha, the Hindu god of wisdom, worshipped by the Javanese Hindus, is located at the mouth of the crater. Mount Bromo is in the middle of a plain called the "Sea of Sand", which has been a protected nature reserve since 1919. On the 14th day of the Yadnya Kasada Hindu festival, the Tenggherese of Probolinggo Regency in East Java travel up the mountain to offer fruit, rice, vegetables, flowers and animal sacrifices to the gods of the mountain by throwing them into the caldera of the volcano.
