Virei is a small town and district in Angola. The district is known for its prehistoric rock art, especially the Tchitundo-Hulo rock art. Located in the southern part of the country, Virei is situated in the Huíla Province, approximately 200 kilometers north of the provincial capital, Lubango. The district's unique cultural and historical significance is attributed to its rich archaeological heritage, with the Tchitundo-Hulo rock art being a prime example. The Tchitundo-Hulo rock art is a remarkable collection of ancient paintings and engravings that date back to the Late Stone Age period, approximately 2,000 to 4,000 years ago. These intricate designs depict various scenes, including animals, humans, and abstract symbols, providing valuable insights into the lives and traditions of the ancient inhabitants of the region. The rock art is not only aesthetically pleasing but also holds significant cultural and historical importance, as it is one of the few remaining testaments to the region's rich cultural heritage. Virei is also known for its ethnic groups and their various customs, especially the Kuval/Mucubal Herero. The main economic activities in the area are agriculture and livestock. The main crops are maize, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and cassava. The amount of arable land is increasing due to demining and deforestation. In addition, government subsidies such as seeds and farm equipment are increasing production to combat hunger and poverty. The once important granite and marble mining in the Virei district, especially near Sayona, is being revived and is providing an economic boost.
