Djibouti Town

Djibouti is the namesake capital of Djibouti, where more people live than the rest of Djibouti combined. The city is located in the Gulf of Tadjoura. It was founded by the French in 1888, on leased land from the ruling Somali and Afar Sultans. In the following period it was the capital of French Somaliland and the subsequent French Territory of Afars and Issas. On the east coast of Djibouti, there is evidence of human settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. The tourism in Djibouti is concentrated in the Djibouti region. The city's attractions contain historic buildings, two main public squares and the Hall of the People. The two tiny islands of Maskali and Moucha, located an hour's boat ride from Djibouti, have madreporic mangrove forests, rich seabed and colorful algae. The local coral gardens are home to a variety of fish species, among them groupers, jacks and barracudas. The Gulf of Tadjoura has a diverse fauna, and its geographical location makes it completely unique. The bay is home to some of the most amazing marine flora and fauna, some of which are on the brink of extinction or face serious environmental threats. Ranging from corals to dugongs, the Gulf of Tadjoura is a cradle for many species that rely on each other for survival. It is no wonder that the bay is one of Djubouti's main tourist attractions, being the perfect place for diving, snorkeling and underwater photography.
