The Tortuguero National Park is located in the Limón province of Costa Rica, in the northeastern part of the country, in the Tortuguero Conservation Area. Although it is remote and accessible only by plane or boat, it is the third most visited park in Costa Rica. The biodiversity of the park is very diverse, with eleven different habitats within the reserve, including rainforests, mangrove forests, swamps, beaches and lagoons. The park was recognized on 3 March 1991 under the Ramsar Convention for its rich biodiversity and ecosystems, which support threatened plant and animal species. The reserve is home to threatened animal species such as the American Crocodile, the Baird's Tapir, marine turtles such as Chelonia mydas and Dermochelys coriacea, the Manatee or Sea Cow and the Tropical Gar, which is protected by Costa Rican law. The park is the breeding ground for many of the main fish used in subsistence fisheries along the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. These forests are habitat to at least four species of Costa Rican cat: jaguar, ocelot, jaguarundi and puma, and three of Costa Rica's four species of monkey, Geoffroy's Spider Monkey, the Mantled Howler and the White-Headed Capuchin. Among other species of mammals are the Three-Toed Sloth, the Paca, the Peccary, the Tapir, the White-Tailed Deer and the Armadillo. The area is home to 442 bird species, among them kingfishers, toucans, Great Blue Herons and parrots.
