Douguia

Douguia is a village in Chad, located on the banks of the Chari River, near Lake Chad, north-west of the capital N'Djamena. The village of Douguia is characterized by its earthen houses style with Sudanese, Nigerian and Libyan inspiration and style. In the narrow streets leading to the banks of the Chari River, women and children go about their daily household activities along the river. A popular activity in the area is a boat trip from Douguia on the Chari River, which usually leads to spotting huge flocks of birds and occasional herds of hippos, with small mud-brick settlements along the banks. All the ingredients of African coastal life can be found here, men canoeing, women washing on rocks and naked children waiting for toys, sweets or pennies. Cameroon is just across the river. The Hadjer el Hamis, in English "Elephant Rock", is a volcanic outcrop near Dougia, shaped like a giant elephant, a must-see.
