Al-Areen Wildlife Park

Al Areen Wildlife Park in Sakhir, Bahrain, is a nature reserve and a zoo. The park covers 7 km² and was created in 1976. The zoo contains species of plants and animals native to Bahrain, as well as species from Africa and South Asia. The park contains 100 000 plant and tree plantations. There are also more than 45 species of animals, 82 species of birds and 25 species of plants. Species such as the Arabian Oryx, South African Cheetah, lion, Savannah Monitor, African Rock Python, Persian Gazelle, Springbok, African Wild Dog, Spotted Hyena, Saluki Dogs, Impala, Fallow Deer, Chapman's Zebra, Honey Badger and Desert Hare can be seen in the park's wildlife section. There are also Arabian and North African species such as the Scimitar-Horned Oryx, Addax, Dama Gazelle, giraffes, Nubian Ibex, Wild Goat and Barbary Sheep. The park also continues to breed endangered species in captivity. Al Areen covers a total area of 800 hectares, divided into two 400-hectare sections; one section is reserved for the general public, while the other is a protected reserve with two surface reservoirs for flora and fauna. Only professionals, researchers, veterinarians and animal caretakers are allowed to enter the reserve. Access to the park's animals is provided by tourist buses from the main entrance. The park itself is a 40-minute drive from Manama and is located next to the Bahrain International Circuit.
