Sevan is one of the most popular resorts in Armenia, located on the northwestern shore of Lake Sevan. The city was built more than 1,925 meters above sea level, 65 km northeast of the capital, Yerevan. The city is surrounded by the Sevan National Park. The Sevan National Park was founded in 1978 to protect Lake Sevan and the surrounding regions. The national reserve occupies significant areas around Lake Sevan, extending from the northeast to the southwest of the city. The area is 1,501 square kilometers, of which 24,900 hectares are lakeside. It is surrounded by the slopes of Areguni, Geghama, Vardenis, Pambak and Sevan Mountain ranges. About 1,600 plant and 330 animal species can be found here. However, scientific research on the mammals of the Sevan basin is rather poor. Wolf, jackal, fox, marten and cat are usually found in here. The 5-hectare Sevan Botanical Garden is located at an altitude of 2,000 meters above sea level and is home to more than 650 native, North American, Asian and European species. It has been operating since 1944 as a satellite of the Yerevan Botanical Garden under the supervision of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences.
