Muxima

Muxima is a town and municipality in Angola. The village, on the banks of the Kwanza River, was occupied by the Portuguese in 1589, who built a church and fort in 1599. The stone and mortar fortress of Muxima is located in Angola's Bengo province. Muxima means "heart" in Kimbundu. There is a shrine to Mary here. Its church, Nossa Senhora da Muxima, was founded in 1599 in colonial Portuguese Angola. Since 1833, after a suspected Marian apparition, Muxima is the most important place of pilgrimage of Angola and the adjacent areas. In 1924, the church was listed as a historical monument. As well as the church, the "Fort Muxima" was also listed as a historical monument in 1924. In addition, the historic center of Muxima as a whole, is one of the state-registered monuments of Angola.
