Tolga

Tolga is internationally known for its high-quality dates. It has more than 500 000 date palm trees. Most of the dates produced are exported. The Tolga oasis was conquered by the Romans in republican times, and a small town was established at Lioua, about 8 km to the south. Large rectangular stones dating from Roman times have been found in the old Tolga, testifying to their presence in the oasis. The town was the seat of the powerful Confederation of Dhouaouda and Ryah from Beni Hilal, a Bedouin clan from southern Egypt to which they migrated under the leadership of the Fatimids between the 10th and 11 th centuries.
