Lake Fierza

The Fierza artificial lake was created in 1978 on the banks of the Drin River to serve the Fierza hydroelectric power plant. The lake also serves as a connecting hub for the inhabitants of Kukes, Tropoja, Has and Puka. The landscape is beautiful in all seasons. An interesting feature of Lake Fierza is that the old town of Kukes lies under the water, which was flooded by the construction of the dam and had to be rebuilt on the nearby hills. With its alpine climate, horse riding, traditional food and customs, but also natural beauties such as the mountains, the lake, the canyons, the forests and the many valleys, Kukes is now becoming a favourite with tourists. The Drin River and parts of the White Drin and Black Drin also runs through the reservoir. The size of the lake is 72.6 km2, of which 2.46 km2 belong to Kosovo. It is 70 km long and has a depth of 128 m. In the Albanian side of the lake there are many beautiful canyons and some small islands. The dam is 167m tall. The lake was declared a Regional Nature Park by the Kukes County Council in 2014.
