Berat

If there’s one place you have to visit in Albania, make it beautiful Berat, also known as ‘the city of a thousand windows’. This wonderful town is home to two ancient neighborhoods, filled with traditional Ottoman houses, and divided by the River Osum. Berat is located in the south of the country, surrounded by mountains and hills. The pine forests above the town, on the slopes of the towering Tomorr Mountains, provide a suitably grand backdrop, which is a national park. According to an Albanian legend, Mount Tomorr was originally a giant who fought another giant, Shpirag, for a young woman. They killed each other and she drowned in tears, which became the Osum River. Berat designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, comprises a unique style of architecture with influences from several civilizations that have managed to coexist for centuries throughout the history. Berat comprises an old fortified city filled with churches and mosques painted with grandiose wealth of visible murals and frescos.
