Southern Coastline

On the southern coast of Socotra, on the shores of the Indian Ocean, there are many isolated beaches, often flanked by large dunes shaped by the winds that blow onto the island in summer. Several of these beaches are totally deserted, with no other tourists or locals. On the beaches you can also see goats grazing on the cliffs in front of the magnificent sea. Aomak beach is a beautiful place located in the southern part of the island. This is practically the only place where there is always green vegetation, not only bushes but also trees, along the edge of the beach. The wind blows most often from the south of the island, from the Indian Ocean, so the beach has the strongest waves of all the beaches of Socorta. The beach is bordered by cliffs made from the same white-grey sandstone as the sand itself. Nearer to the southern edge is a multicolored pebble beach, which, together with the vivid colors of the shallow sea and the single-color sand, makes for a wonderful photographic backdrop. There are very few buildings along the beach, the scenery is wild and people come here for the trekking. The sea here is about forty meters deep and the waves are turquoise blue. To the east of the Aomak beach lies the extensive Zahek Sand Dunes, whose white sands stretch out to infinity until they spill into the Indian Ocean. West of Zahek is the smaller but still stunning Hayf Sand Dunes, which also have beautiful white sand. Both Zahek and Hayf are at their most beautiful at sunset, when shadows of pink and gold are cast in the crevices of the dunes.
