Bạch Mã National Park

Bạch Mã National Park is located in central Vietnam, not far from Huế City. Situated at an average altitude of 1450 meters and just 10 kilometers from the sea, the climate in Bạch Mã is very nice. It covers an area of 37 487 hectares and consists of three zones: a core area under strict protection, an administrative area and buffer zone. The area still has a fairly large amount of vast primeval forest with a diverse flora of 2,147 species and fauna of more than 1,500 species, 93 of which are on the Vietnam Red List and the Global Red List. In addition, Bạch Mã National Park is situated in a mountainous area, right on the border between the once North and South Vietnam. Here, both landscapes blend, so Bạch Mã is much more diverse than other national parks in Vietnam. With its waterfalls, cool forests and blooming rhododendrons, this is an absolutely gorgeous place. The park's mammals are not particularly well known, although important species such as the Asian Elephant, the White-Cheeked Gibbon and the Red-Shanked Douc Langur were found here in the past. The park also shelters important bird species, most notably Vietnamese endemics like the Vietnamese Crested Argus, Annam Partridge and Edwards' Pheasant, which were thought to be extinct. The park is located in the Annamite Mountains and is among the most humid places in Vietnam. Its mountains are mainly granite and the topography is typically very steep. The Bạch Mã means "White Horse", taking its name from the white cloud surrounding the mountain peak.
