Triglav National Park

The Triglav National Park, Slovenia's only park, is found near Bled and covers one of the most scenic parts of Slovenia, stretching across almost the entire Julian Alps of Slovenia. The park is very spectacular and varied, covering 4% of Slovenia's territory. The highest mountain in the country, Triglav, lies in the middle of the park, which takes its name from the mountain. Triglav is surrounded by deep, steep glacial valleys covered with green forests and pastures. Crystal-clear mountain streams and small rivers flow along numerous ravines and beautiful gorges, such as the Vintgar, Mlinarica and Mostnica, which flow into two major rivers, the Sava and Soča. Hiding high in the mountains are Lakes Triglav and Križ, while Bohinj is home to Lake Bohinj, Slovenia's largest permanent natural lake. The lakes in the park are all glacial in origin. The picture of this beautiful and varied landscape is completed by an exceptional wealth of flora and fauna, with many rare and protected plants and animals. Large animals in the Triglav National Park include wild wolves, bears and steinbocks. Out here, in an area of magnificent nature and many myths and legends, people are still living as they used to, in perfect harmony with nature and with a sense of tradition. In the park's secluded corners are old farms and homesteads typical of the landscape. Many Alpine pastures are still grazed by livestock and farmers continue to make cheese in the traditional way.
