Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo is the administrative area of Monaco, where the Monte Carlo Casino is found. The city is located on a prominent escarpment along the French Riviera, at the foot of the Maritime Alps. Close to the western end of the quarter is the world-famous Place du Casino, the gambling center that made Monte-Carlo an international synonym for the extravagant display and reckless dispersal of wealth. For many decades, Monte Carlo has been a favorite destination for royalty, the public and film stars. Monte Carlo is one of Europe's top tourist resorts, although many of the most important tourist destinations are located in other parts of Monaco. The city is the venue for many international sporting events, including the ATP Masters 1000 tennis tournament during the clay court season. Monte Carlo is home to a large part of the Circuit de Monaco, which hosts the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix. In addition, it hosts world championship boxing matches, the European Poker Tour Grand Final and the World Backgammon Championship, and the Monaco International Auto Show, as well as fashion shows and many other events. The Monte Carlo Rally is one of the longest-running and most prestigious car rallies, marking the start of the World Rally Championship season from 1973 to 2008 and again from 2012, and also served as the opening round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge from 2009 to 2011. Monte Carlo has also been the location for many films, books, TV shows and video games.
