Bechiyal

Bechiyal is a village in Maap municipality, in the state of Yap. In 1984, when visited, it had about ten inhabitants, but it was once larger, with a population of about 200 in the early 20th century. The village has a significant number of stone platforms, places where houses may have once stood, and the site of the village is known to be archaeologically sensitive. In 1983 it was added to the United States National Register of Historic Places. The platforms are truly spectacular, and the traditional meeting house is incredible. It was designed here in Yap by John Tamag, Chief of Bechiyal village and the main traditional architect. Although the coastal village was destroyed by the 2004 typhoon, it has been rebuilt and visitors are still welcome on the beach and can camp there. The area is also home to a number of endemic bird species.
