Thaba-Tseka

Thaba-Tseka is a district in Lesotho, and the district capital or camptown, which is the only town in the district, has the same name. The district is a major tourist attraction in Lesotho, as it is home to Africa's second largest arch dam, the Katse Dam. This concrete arch dam on the Malibamat'so River in Lesotho, is the second largest double arch dam in Africa. It is part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, which will ultimately include five large dams in isolated rural areas. The dam is located directly below the confluence of the Bokong River, which is the western branch of the Katse reservoir. Thaba-Tseka town lies at an altitude of around 2,750 meters above sea level, which makes it one of the highest towns in Africa. The town is bordered by spectacular mountain landscapes and is famous for its varied outdoor activities such as hiking, horse riding and fishing. The local culture is strongly marked by traditional Basotho customs, with many of the people continuing to use traditional forms of dress and housing. The town has a couple of small shops and restaurants, but overall, it is a quiet, rural area.
