Brunei

Brunei is an independent Islamic sultanate on the northern coast of the island of Borneo, in Southeast Asia. Around three-fifths of the country is covered by intact tropical rainforest, and another fifth is covered by secondary forest. The undisturbed rainforest is mainly composed of hardwoods of the Dipterocarpaceae family, most of them of commercial value. Vast expanses of freshwater and peat swamps are found in the poorly drained lowland areas of the Belait and Tutong rivers, and mangrove swamps are frequent in the lower reaches of the rivers and in protected coastal areas. The rainforest's complex vegetation supports a rich fauna, including Proboscis Monkeys, Leaf Monkeys, Pigtail Macaques, Gibbons, Sun Bears, Sambar Deer, pangolins, bats and numerous other mammals. Brunei's most notable birds include Argus Pheasants and Hornbills. The country's swamps and forests are home to many reptile species, including the Large Reticulated Python. The abundance of fish and shrimp in the Gulf of Brunei is due in part to the mangrove trees and the vegetation they provide, which act as nurseries for juvenile marine species. Birds are also common here as they use the marsh meadows as feeding grounds. One of the best places in Brunei for nature conservation is Ulu Temburong National Park. The national park is a pristine natural heritage site and it is quite diverse. As in the rainforest, it is difficult to see the rich wildlife within the park. An extensive network of wooden walkways would allow visitors to walk along the walkways without ever touching the ground.
